Corus, Save Our Steel, 2009

I took this at the Durham Miners’ Gala back in 2009. At the time the Corus steelworks was under threat of closure due to the loss of a major contract.  The plant was partially mothballed any many jobs were lost.  In 2011 the plant was reopened by SSI who purchased it from Tata for £291m.

In October 2015 the plant was closed with the loss of 2200 jobs and it looks very unlikely that it will open again.  It made the steel for the Tyne Bridge and Sydney Harbour Bridge, now it’s just scrap.
